This is Energy Poverty. Globally, more than 1.2 billion people are living in energy poverty, and 200 million of these people live in southern Africa.

Energy poverty has a profound impact on the individuals and communities it affects. Health, education, poverty, and gender issues are all impacted by lack of energy. In fact, the United Nations Development Programme states "reliable energy access enables and accelerates the progress against each and every one of the Sustainable Development Goals."
