South Africa: Migrations, Movements, (Im)Mobilities

The museum partners with the ACT Year-Round for an evening of free critically acclaimed short films and visual art from South Africa. Dr. Jay Schutte and Dr. David Riep will speak to explore the theme Migrations, Movements, (Im)Mobilities and how this motif is represented in various mediums of South African art.

Short films:
Mthunzi | Tebogo Malebogo | 2019 | South Africa | 9 minutes | Colorado premiere
Based on a true story as witnessed by the director himself, Mthunzi, challenges perceptions of race and judgement, exploring the ever-present prejudices in modern South Africa where people of different race live side by side in the same areas. Tebogo Malebogo’s debut short film highlights complex socio-political issues that resonate around the globe, where one’s relationship with fear and the unknown is fueling desires to reject others and to hate. – Locarno

Mma Moeketsi | Reabetswe Moeti | 2018 | South Africa | 26 minutes | Colorado premiere
In the wake of the Marikana Platinum Mine wage strike of August 2012, Moeketsi’s phone is off and he is nowhere to be found. Mma Moeketsi can do nothing but wait pensively for her son to call her or at least pick up her phone calls. One part of her life is at a standstill while her physical presence must still operate as the housekeeper of her suburban employers, in an empty, lonely silence.

Speakers:
Dr. David Riep, Associate Professor, Department of Art and Art History, Associate Curator of African Art, Gregory Allicar Museum of Art.
Dr. Jay Schutte, Post Doctorate Fellow, Anthropology and Geography and Communication Studies

In collaboration with CSU’s Africa Center.
